THE KINGS STEPS, OFF THE STRUET, BRECON

The steep steps that you show in your picture gallery are called King Charles Steps. After the battle of Naseby in 1645, Charles passed through Brecon collecting fresh forces. He reached Brecon Priory on August 5th and was received by Herbert Price, Governor of the priory town and castle. That night he wrote to his son telling him to flee to France and be under his mothers care. In the battle that was fought the king lost 750 men and he himself was thought to have fled down the steps and into the groves where he hid.
